Honouring a Pioneer: The 9th Hon. John Ssebaana Kizito Memorial Lecture

On 26 August 2026, insurance professionals, educators, industry leaders and university students gathered at Makerere University for the 9th Hon. John Ssebaana Kizito Memorial Lecture.

Held under the theme, “The Future of Insurance: Empowering Uganda’s Next Generation of Risk Leaders,” the lecture celebrated the enduring contribution of a visionary whose work helped shape Uganda’s insurance industry.

For SWICO, the occasion carries special significance. Hon. John Ssebaana Kizito was not only a distinguished public servant and business leader, but also a pioneer of locally owned insurance and a founding Chairman of Statewide Insurance Company. His conviction that Ugandans could establish and sustain strong institutions remains deeply woven into SWICO’s story.

This year’s discussions went beyond remembering the past. Speakers challenged young people to recognise the expanding opportunities available within insurance, including underwriting, actuarial science, claims management, technology, data analysis, innovation and emerging-risk management.

The keynote address, delivered by Dr. Sande Protazio, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda, highlighted the importance of widening access to insurance, developing professional skills and preparing the next generation to address increasingly complex risks.

The memorial lecture was a timely reminder that the best way to honour Hon. Ssebaana Kizito’s legacy is to continue building upon it. At SWICO, we remain committed to advancing his vision through professionalism, innovation and dependable protection for individuals, families and businesses.

His legacy remains both a foundation and a challenge to every new generation: to inherit the industry, strengthen it and make insurance work for more Ugandans.
