From April 23rd to 25th, industry leaders, regulators, and innovators gathered in Mbarara for the 7th IBAU Conference under the theme “A Whole New World: Major Trends Shaping the Globe.”
The conversations were not just forward-looking. They were urgent.
One of the strongest themes to emerge was the need for regulatory evolution. As the insurance landscape changes, traditional frameworks are being challenged. There were strong calls for adaptive regulatory environments, including sandbox frameworks that allow innovation to thrive without compromising stability.
Digital transformation was another central focus. Artificial intelligence, mobile-first platforms, and cybersecurity are no longer optional enhancements. They are becoming foundational to how insurance is distributed, serviced, and scaled. The message was clear: organisations that fail to embrace technology risk being left behind.
At the same time, the issue of insurance penetration remained front and centre. With Uganda’s penetration still hovering around 1%, the industry faces both a challenge and an opportunity. Expanding access through microinsurance, partnerships, and simplified products will be critical in driving growth.
The role of brokers is also evolving. No longer just intermediaries, brokers are being repositioned as strategic advisors who leverage technology and data to deliver personalised solutions.
SWICO was proudly represented by Hamza Mutebi, Ronald Jaggwe Muyingo, and Ssonko Jackson. Their participation ensured that we are not just observers of industry change, but active contributors to its direction.
As we look ahead, one thing is certain. The future will not wait for us to catch up. It will reward those who move first.
